Sport planes are spooky on their own, adding water to them (and the tendency to try to skim it) makes them spookier still. And my memory is that the requirements to be a 'sport pilot' are significantly lower than even a VFR pilot, but I could be off there.
BRC is right; 'hobby flying' isn't really a thing that should be done. Dedicate to it or don't do it, IMO. I was a solo flight away from getting my VFR rating and decided I just wasn't going to be willing to put the time and continuous training into it to be comfortable enough so I walked away.
