I’m seeing the potential method to Veach’s madness, but it is contingent on a couple of things.
If they can get at least a top 45 pick for Ford, I think he will be gone. And Houston will obviously be cut more than likely. Cut Sorensen and you’ve got near $45M in cap space for 2019.
But you can’t get rid of those two (Ford/Houston) and not add some new foundational pieces along the way. If they don’t sign a player or two such as Landon Collins, Trey Flowers, Anthony Barr, etc., then it comes off a lot like a punt on the 2019 season.
But if you do go out there and make a couple of signings to set your defense up decently heading into the draft with potentially 4 picks in the top 63 and 5 picks in the top 100, you then have a shot to really add depth and playmakers on both sides of the ball. That extra pick might be what they need to feel comfortable drafting a C/G on day two, or a TE. It’ll open their options much more.
