Even then, I'm not sure Martin will ever reveal much about them. For how much of an impact they've had on the overall story, they haven't shown up much in the books.
The only times I can remember them were the AGoT prologue, the Fist of the First Men, the two wights at Castle Black, letters telling of "dead things in the water and woods" by Eastwatch, and I vaguely recall a wight being mentioned in Varamyr Sixskins prologue.. any other encounters?

The prequel series is taking place during The Long Night (period) so it's possible we'll get much more supernatural history and explanation than we got during GoT. Martin is directly involved, as well.
