I don't think PPG is the greatest barometer of success, but it is something.
I also don't think yards is a great barometer either.
If you had a great deal of data to extrapolate for teams in close games on defensive possessions, and the efficiency of the defense in those situations would be the best way to evaluate. But it can be difficult to get a statistical significant sample over the course of a season.
Clearly teams defend differently when they are up big in the second half, than they do if it is a tie game.
