You can't go wrong with Savage no-frills plain old good rifles. My brother's first deer rifle was a Savage 99 lever action with the rotating magazine in .300 savage. That was a great deer cartridge much better ballistics than the 30-30 win. The .308 win was based on the .300 Savage cartridge. There is still debate that the .300 savage is still the better round but when the US military adopted the .308 it took a backseat. The .300 Savage is still popular today and easily found over counter ammo. My brother still prefers the Savage 99 in the Missouri brush for whitetails. I have the dies and a special load I reload just for him.
Arthur Savage is a lessor known John Browning and the inventor of the Tommy Gun and many airplane mounted rotary magazine machine guns. He and his partner Joshua Stevens are a pretty interesting read of there history in gun design.
