I'm not really sure. Wikipedia says that both Culp and Matuszak were threatening to jump to the World Football League, but a trade wouldn't fix that problem. Arrowhead Addict says that Culp had already signed a WFL contract when he was traded, and that makes more sense if that required the Chiefs to trade him at a big discount.

One might also wonder if the Chiefs were trying to get younger. At that point they were definitely an aging team on the decline. But they also gave up a first-round pick, so it doesn't make a ton of sense.
