He did want out. That's true. But you're leaving out an important component. Why did he want out. He wanted out because Pete could see that his best days were behind and was working the offense to carry him because Pete knew that Wilson was no longer able to carry the offense. Wilson couldn't handle that. He was in denial about the truth. So yeah, he wanted out.
