As for the topic, why have a tournament at the beginning of the season, to break up the monotony of a long season? I mean, the season just started.

Adds excitement. I think it's pretty awesome, this tournament. They don't have a one-game single elimination tournament. The postseason tournament is to crown a champion. This is March Madness style one loss and you go home type of thing.
