File the claim. Even if it's just in principle.
I was scammed out of $2,000 back in 2002 buying a MacBook on eBay the guy took the money, never sent the computer. After months of stress and chasing dead ends (payPal protection topped out at $200 back then) I filed with the FBI since it was across state lines.
Three years later I got a call from an agent that they had prosecuted the guy and I was getting two payments of $1,000 from him.
