Of course it's predictable, it's based on a true story. They're not going to make a movies based on a true story where a high school team goes 6-5 and then loses by 80 in the first round of the playoffs. That's like saying "Titanic" was predictable because you knew the ship was going to crash or saying any Ben Affleck film is predictable because you knew it was going to suck.
I read the book a while back and it was a great depiction of how obsessed small towns can be with their sports programs. According to reviewers on ESPN.com, the movie scores high in that it is pretty true to the book, moreso than a lot of "true story" sports movies.
