Keep in mind that Alice was Mike's maid before he married Carol...this leads me to believe that it happened this way: Alice had killed Mike's ex-wife so she could get some of that sympathy-lust...unfortunately for her, Mike already had an affair with Carol, who's ex-husband had died in the war. Alice plotted Carol's murder, but at the last minute decided that she shouldn't attempt getting away with two homicides.
