A Free Safety is your cover (or "pass") safety. He's generally not assigned a particular player (or really even area, save 'deep') and is "free" to react to the play and go where the play goes.
A Strong Safety is your safety on the tight-end side... He's your "run" safety. He needs to be a strong tackler and be able to shed blocks, as obviously, most teams will run to the strong side where there is an extra blocker (the te).
Free safety = pass safety
Strong safety = run safety
