Because the purpose of language is to communicate. People have chosen to single out words used as adjectives as offensive despite their meaning and context. It's completely beside the point of language and words, so it's irrational. What is rational is hearing what is being communicated and reacting to that, not to the medium.
Note I'm not saying that people aren't genuinely offended, they are, I'm just saying it's irrational despite that. The reason they are offended is obvious, they were conditioned to be since children, but that doesn't make it rational. I would think more of a person who chose to control the feeling instead of using it to lord over others as so many do, like you right now for instance.
