If you're going to Wakarusa, I may be going myself.
The bands to check out there are: Donna the Buffalo, Railroad Earth, Blueground Undergrass, and MOFRO- four damn good reasons why I may be going.

I'm not saying that they don't improvise...but what in the world other than the social aspect of panic reminds you of the dead...panic doesn't do anything that even remotely resembles dark star....now there's a vehicle for improvisation...pure organic improv as opposed to panic's prolonged soloing over changes...
if you check out some live umphrey's, you'll find that they make spots in their sets for pure improv...these improv sections sometimes turn into songs, depending on how successful they are in the framework of the show
my waka list:
wilco
conspirator
son volt
samples
galactic
umphrey's
big metal rooster
mofro
sci
mule
carbon leaf
split lip rayfield
junior brown
jay farrar acoustic
the list goes on and on...
can't wait for the show...
