You're comparing WSP to DSO (Dark Star Orchestra)? You can't compare those two bands, 'cause DSO does nothing more than take an entire Grateful Dead show and play the exact line-up from opening song to ending song. BTW- DSO does an unbeliveably awesome job doing so- the absolute best GD cover band by far and away.
Improvisation is merely a jazz term meaning the music isn't planned, but rather performed live by feeding off of each other's music- hence, the music can go anywhere it wants to. All jambands do this, and to say WSP doesn't, is pure fallacy.
This is the one reason why Miles Davis is considered a genious in what he does- he simply has a group of musicians go into a recording studio and they start jamming with no songs in mind.
Van Morrison even did this with his famed album, Astral Weeks. He had the musicians go into a booth and they were to feed off of Van's singing and his songs....this is improvisation as well.
But, you can't compare WSP to DSO 'cause you're really doing nothing more than comparing WSP to the GD.
