If you accept what Carl says here, then both the ESPN article referenced in your first link and B_Ambuehl's original post amount to anti-Carl spin IMO. If you think Carl is just as likely to be lying as he is to be telling the truth, then we are left without much information about what actually happened.

The way I take it is that Carl was taking a call from Houston (#16) and listened to the offer. (maybe even Cin. at #17.) If he would have thought that they wouldn't take DJ then he makes the deal. (how could you think about gambling on that though) But figuring that they would take DJ, they don't make the deal. Kind of like the Deal Dallas did when we got Sims. Dallas was pretty sure that Roy W. would be there by moving down two slots and that was a smart move on their part. (since it worked) I think any team that wanted our spot had their eyes on DJ, Carl knew it, and didn't make the deal.
