Coaching Highlights:Matsko will enter his seventh season with the Rams in 2005, and will team up with John Benton to coach the offensive line for the second year in a row. Matsko, who teamed with legendary NFL coach Jim Hanifan to coach the men up front for his first five seasons in St. Louis, came to the Rams in 1999 after coaching the offensive line for the New York Giants from 1997-98.
Prior to joining the Giants, Matsko coached the offensive line for the New Orleans Saints from 1994-96 and entered the NFL to coach in the same capacity for the Arizona Cardinals from 1992-93.
Matsko was a fullback at Kent State and began his coaching career there in 1973 as a student assistant coach. John coached at Miami of Ohio for three years, two as a graduate assistant (1974-75) and one as offensive line coach (1977).
Matsko was head coach at Danbury High in Lakeside-Marblehead, Ohio, in 1976. Matsko was offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at North Carolina (1978-84). He coached at Navy (1985) and Arizona (1986), then moved to the University of Southern California (1987-91), serving as offensive coordinator during his last three seasons at USC.
John is from Mentor, Ohio, and has a bachelor’s degree in business education from Kent State and a Master’s in education from Miami of Ohio. He is married to Kim, has two daughters, Marie and Liz, and two sons, John and Michael. The Matskos reside in Lake St. Louis, MO.
