OK, here's real-life experience. I have these speakers (Advent) and have them out on my patio and run the music from my upstairs computer. They run on batteries (or you can plug them in...but then the wire issue) and pick up the frequency fairly well, BUT if you're looking for stereo sound, mine don't get that (although they advertise that) and indeed the sound quality isn't as good. I also use them with my big screen projector as surround sound. If you are not too picky about sound, they're fun to have (in my back yard I have a volleyball court and you can just pick up these speakers and take they out to the court). They take 8 C batteries each and will run for about 12 hours before they begin to loose the signal. There are limitations as to how many walls it will transfer through and how far it can transmit (200 feet?). Hope this has been helpful. I got them on Ebay for about $60.00 for the pair and the transmitter and AC cords, etc. I got refurbished but they were guaranteed the same as new ones.
