I view it as another piece of the puzzle.....Sims, if healthy, along with Edwards, should upgrade the DT position, if marginally. Hali will be an upgrade over Hicks, the only question is "when." DJ, Kawika, and Allen are maturing--and all could really have "break-out" years. Teams can't "pick on" the #2 CB anymore....which will mean less gambling by our safeties. I think Pollard will push Knight to play harder; and Law's presence and leadership and experience will only help the secondary.
Overall, a young and improving defense, has just picked up a real leader and playmaker. He may not be the Law of 4-5 years ago....but with everything else that's going on with our defense, he should help immensely. Seriously. He could be the final "cog" in a machine that has been getting better....anyway. He puts them "there," barring major injuries with the others.
We've gone from a team with 1 or 2 bright spots on "defense," to a team with only one or two holes (a DT, maybe a Saftey 'away'), IMHO.
