I wouldn't blame Roaf. Hamstring injuries are a pain in the a$$.
I hurt mine a couple years back, just from stretching, and it kept me from running for months, and I was PTing it big time.
It came back a few times, not even from major exertion (imagine the force a guy like Roaf puts on it to explode off the line. that's the major source of leverage for that action). So, it's very believable that he could have hoped (thought) he would come around, then realized no dice.
and it's even more believable that Carl et al would have not made the announcement expecting himself to be able to convince Roaf to give another year.
