My theory is that weird people gravitate to areas that have strong reputations for beauty, nice weather, etc. If you're living in a nice solid state like Pennsylvania or Texas or Iowa and your life is messed up, you go to a place like Florida or southern California or Colorado assuming that your life will be better there. Once you're there, you then discover that weirdness is a highly transportable trait.
