A "sanded" ball --- yes --- there are bowling balls you can actually go over with fine sandpaper --- will grip the lane much better than a "shinny" ball on oily lanes...

I agree, always check the condition of the lane before proceeding. My balls prefer the lane to be oily but a dryer lane can be made oily quick enough.
