It could be ambient background noise fouling the test, I'll try it someday when the dogs are in the garage and the kids are at school..

I absolutely love the reciever tho. I previously had a Harmon Kardon which I really liked as well but I had to get one with HDMI connections..

My TV has two HDMI inputs Sony SXRD 50" but I was hoping there would be a discernable difference in audio using HDMI over Optical, my ear could not tell the difference but each individual speaker seemed to be a little more precise on their assignments..

I found it a little difficult to learn a whole new reciever, but eventually I'll get it down.. You'll probably have it figured out real quick..

You probably won't notice a big difference until you start to see true 8 channel surround from stuff like Blu-Ray or HD-DVD...with that being said, our receivers don't have a DTS-HD or similar 8 channel decoder...however, hopefully this is something that could be accomplished w/ a firmware upgrade...
