There is reason to believe that it was his landlady who actually invented the cotton gin. But since women weren't allowed to hold patents at the time, she had him apply for her. It didn't matter much money wise because most of the farmers ripped off his invention for their own use. By the time he got it under control, there was only a year left on the patent.
