It works like that most of the time in the top three pro sports. It's just one of those semantics arguments of what MVP really means which comes up every year MVP is discussed. I don't necessarily side with either position but when the votes come they usually tend to side with the best player on one of the top teams.

I also don't think that Kobe is the clear cut best player in the league. A good case can be made, but you could also argue that someone like Dirk's scoring stats could be just as gaudy if his team relied on him that much on offense due to having a mediocre team. You will get no argument from me that Kobe is and has been the most prolific scorer in the league over the past few years. Plays solid D as well, but that doesn't make him the de facto best player.

Kobe is playing on a team that is probably going to win around 42-43 games and finish with about the 11th best record in the league with a first round exit.
