Well, I have to post this somewhere, but this isn't worth its own thread.

It's an email exchange between Walter Cherepinski, author and editor-in-chief of Walter Football, and myself. Any thoughts are welcome.

My email.

Let me ask you something, as a die-hard Chiefs fan.

You've always been outspoken as to how Trent Green is an overrated QB, because he was armed in KC with an elite backfield, OL, and tight end.

Yet you've crowned Philip Rivers with a three star rating in the San Diego Chargers' season preview and you declared him a Top 10 QB, even though he himself is armed in San Diego with an elite backfield, OL, and tight end.

Just trying to decipher why Trent Green was so transparently untalented yet Philip Rivers is a Top 10 QB.

Thanks.

His response.

Thanks for visiting my site and sending me an e-mail.

You make a great argument regarding the comparisons between Philip Rivers and the Trent Green of yesteryear.

First, while I said Trent Green was armed with powerful weapons around him, it was only to state that Holmes, Johnson, Gonzalez, the offensive line, etc. enhanced his skills and made him look better than he was. Note that I never said Green was horrible; I just said he was overrated. If I stated otherwise, let me know so I can change my words. Green used to be regarded as one of the premier quarterbacks in the NFL. I never thought he should have been part of that echelon; rather, the Green of 2002, 2003, etc. probably would have been ranked between 8 and 16 in my rankings.

I also think Rivers has way more potential than Green ever had. Rivers essentially advanced as far as Green ever did in his career last year - a great record and a second-round exit after a bye despite having a great supporting cast - but keep in mind that Rivers was basically a rookie. I think he'll continue to improve. Remember, in my rankings I said, "This list predicts how well each signal caller will play this season, and this season only." Rivers should be much better in 2007 than he was in 2006 (at least I think he will be). Meanwhile, Green will continue to struggle.

Hope this answered your concerns,

Walt

I think it's a reasonable argument.
