Breakdown: After a solid week-and-a-half of work, Sunday marks an off-day in River Falls. It appears that the time off is arriving at precisely the right moment for Chiefs players. Herm Edwards cut Saturday evening’s Vikings-Chiefs scrimmage about 45 minutes short after some minor on-field skirmishes between the two clubs during team drills. Edwards attributed Saturday’s scrap to tired players that were ready for a break.
“Everybody has short fuses tonight,” Edwards commented. “One thing leads to another and you know what’s going to happen. Brad (Childress) and myself were a little nervous and that live scrimmage went from 16 plays, to 14 plays and it ended up at six.”
Approximately 4,000 fans packed inside UWRF’s Ramer Field despite a chilly evening featuring light rain and a steady breeze throughout the practice. The practice plan was identical to Friday’s script in Mankato with a few minor exceptions. Edwards and Childress cut out one-on-one drills between the cornerbacks and wide receivers citing an increased potential for injuries due to wet field conditions. Specials teams units worked on the punting game in Mankato, but the kicking game was highlighted in River Falls. Each club attempted a handful of field goal attempts into a steady wind.
River Falls Scrimmage Notables:
QB Damon Huard took the first set of snaps with the first-team offense. QB Brodie Croyle took the first set on Friday in Mankato.
Huard had a productive evening, connecting on the majority of his pass attempts. His night was highlighted with a touchdown strike to TE Tony Gonzalez.
The Chiefs pass rush was effective again on Saturday evening. They flushed QB Tarvaris Jackson out of the pocket multiple times, causing whistles to blow indicating a coverage sack.
Chiefs fifth-round draft pick K Justin Medlock got his first look at a live NFL kick rush and performed well. The former UCLA Bruin connected on five of six field goal attempts from 30, 34, 37, 40 and 42 yards. His lone miss was a 45-yard attempt that sailed wide left.
FB Kris Wilson logged five receptions out of the backfield against the Vikings.
WR Titus Ryan caught a nine route for a 30-yard gain down to the Vikings one-yard line during team passing drills.
LB Donnie Edwards made a fantastic read, bolting past offensive lineman to stop RB Mewelde Moore for a three-yard loss on the first play of inside run.
Kansas City’s first-team linebacking core gave Chiefs fans a glimpse of their speed when they all closed out of their pass drops to hit TE Jeff Dugan as he caught the ball on a three-yard underneath route.
During inside run, LB Kendrell Bell chased RB Artose Pinner to the sideline, causing Pinner to fumble. The fumbled ball bounced a few times before rolling out of bounds. Bell also logged a sack of QB Tarvaris Jackson during 11-on-11 drills.
LB Keyaron Fox nearly intercepted a QB Brooks Bollinger pass when he broke in front of a post route from his left outside linebacker position.
Fans harassed an official after S Greg Wesley was called for pass interference. Fans thought Wesley made a clean play when came up from his safety position to break-up a short out route.
WR Brent Little notched a few quality receptions throughout the evening.
DT Ron Edwards looked impressive during one-on-one drills with the Vikings offensive line. He continually pushed Minnesota offensive linemen backwards with an effective bull rush. Edwards later teamed with DE Jimmy Wilkerson for a sack in team drills.
Chiefs 2007 second-round draft pick DE Turk McBride held his own against Vikings All-Pro T Bryant McKinnie throughout the evening. McBride worked with the first-team defense as DEs Tamba Hali and Jared Allen were held out of the scrimmage.
LB Derrick Johnson displayed solid man-to-man coverage skills on passing plays against Minnesota tight ends and running backs.
LB Nick Reid lost his helmet when he met a Minnesota fullback attempting a lead block at the line of scrimmage. Despite losing his helmet, Reid delivered the blunt of the blow.
Vikings 2007 first-round draft pack, RB Adrian Peterson, participated in Saturday’s scrimmage after sitting out on Friday due to a minor injury. He took his first carry of team scrimmage for a 10-yard gain off left tackle.
Former running mates RB Priest Holmes and FB Tony Richardson caught up with each other for the first time in two years after Saturday’s scrimmage. Holmes didn’t make the trip to Mankato on Friday. Holmes didn’t participate in Saturday’s scrimmage either, but ran conditioning drills with strength and conditioning coach Cedric Smith during the course of the evening.
