Football is a fascinating sport, really. I suppose its origins are in rugby. But rugby is a free-for-all, maniacal, confusing mess at times. On the other hand, American football is highly structured.
As I mentioned in the starter, I don't think it would be nearly as popular were it not for the fact that you completely stop the game, one team gets to call a "play", then they get to run their "play", see how it works, then they completely stop the game again.
It gives everybody time to think about what just happened, evaluate the results, and prepare for the next effort. It's very much like life. Or, rather, the way life should be.
