When you have power and influence you rate any decision based on how much you have over that person at the moment.
The press won't find out because you can intimidate the hooker, buy off the pimp, etc.
The press doesn't care. The story is bigger than the bribe, it's why they risk their lives in some cases. To them the story > power. It is power.
Well, that and hubris...
