It's also because smaller ball parks and they throw harder and lift alot of weight with their legs to give a strong base. Probably more wear and tear on the elbow and the shoulder. Also back in the day you could get away with more garbage pitchers now guys are bigger and stronger and can go opposite way for homeruns. Curveballs sliders have to have max bite on them.
