Another thing on the same subject that irritates me is the mandatory tip most resturaunts add for large groups of people. To me, the tip is something given for good service, but to demand it be given is tacky IMO - And, I have noticed that those that automatically add the tip into the order usually give the poorer service to boot.
well most servers have 4 or 5 table sections...and turn them no more than two or three times a night...so if your party takes up a whole section for two hours...rings up a $300 bill and you leave $5 bucks...not only does that server make jack shit for the night but he/she ends up paying to serve you...most restaurants servers have to tip out 3% of their total sales...so on a $300 tab the server has to pay $9 to bussers, hosts and the bartender...which is why a 15% gratuity is generally added to parties of 8 or more...

If the service is lousy, speak to a manager about it and they will waive the automatic gratuity...
