The option also owned college football for 30 years. It didn't work in the NFL for the same reason that you can't solely employ the spread: too much speed on defense.
The spread is a part of any effective system. If we don't start running the ball more effectively with it, it's going to turn into the Run N' Shoot, minus the option routes.
