That's a great mentality. You should definitely write the book on a QB because you didn't like how he played for 3 or 4 starts. Thigpen deserves a full offseason to work with coaches, work with receivers, to work on his mechanics, and to work with a full playbook. Because he was third string, he has never had access to any of those until midseason 2008.
Yes, you bring in strong competition and I'd be fine with that being a first round pick. And yes, you yank him if the new QB clearly outperformns Thigpen. And yes, you yank Thigpen if he isn't playing to a very high level in 2009. But the stupidest strategy in the book would be to say that Thigpen doesn't win a job in 2008 no way, no how. Jobs shouldn't be guaranteed to players just because of their draft position.
