And that's fine. But I think that's a different case. There you had a stopgap average veteran competing against a top 5, future bright QB. Nobody ever thought Kitna was a long-term option and everyone knew he was only starting until Cincy thought Palmer was ready. Still, between Palmer and Cutler, it showed strong coaching decisiveness to go with the young QB even if there was a veteran doing just fine.
The difference is that Thigpen is still somewhat unknown and so would be a top 5 QB. It begs the question: if Thigpen does really well and you draft Stafford, what do you do? That's where the gray area comes in. In practice, you keep Thigpen in. In reality, there will probably be a lot of pressure from the fans and from up top to go with Stafford. It's just something that always happens when you draft a top 5 QB.
