In my Slovenian family I had my uncles Ernie (born "Jernej," note the "ie"), Tony (born Anton, but no "ie" later), Johnny (Johan, again, no "ie"), Frankie (Francis), Louie, Charlie and my father, Al (Strangely he was originally named Alexia but called Lochshe). Those last three were born long after my grandparents arrived here. They were given Americanized names to begin with, with exception of my father. He was supposed to become a priest, according to tradition.

The women were Fannie (Frances) and Jessie (Johannas).

Among the three that did not reach adulthood were Maria (Marie, they called her), and two others who died shortly after birth. I don't remember their names.

Slovenia is next door to Italy.

The "ie" or "y" suffix was very common in those days.

Trust me. You didn't want to mess with Ernie, Tony, Johnny, and Frankie. It would not end well.
