My dad had one... he literally woke up blind in one eye one day and went to the doctor to see wtf happened. He had some sort of surgery and wore an eyepatch for a while. I'm not sure exactly the details of it because I was away at college when it all transpired about 5 years ago, but he did exhibit a lot of the symptoms you talked about like floaters and flashes in his eye. His eyesight has been pretty exceptionally bad for a long time though. The good news is he leads an active lifestyle now and I've never heard him complain about it since the procedure.
