My daughter had a detached retina, at least in her case it was due to premature birth and the retina's were not fully developed. In her case, she has laser surgery that basically killed the part of the retina that was detaching. That was 17 years ago and she is fine today. She has limited periphial vision due to the part of the retina that was detached, but otherwise fine.
