I don't know enough about the Jonas Brothers to critically analyze their sexual content.
But I can't see the fans of Jonas Brothers being the same as fans of Rolling Stones or The Clash at their peak. I can't believe anyone over the age of 15 is really a fan of them. Seems like their fan base is made up of 12 year old girls who ask their friends which one they'd rather marry and end up in tears over the perceived competition.
In that case, do I agree or disagree with the author here? It seems like he wouldn't mind if they were "honest" with themselves and just took off the purity ring (which is an advertising tool) and wrote about the greatness of feelings in oral sex for their 12 year old fans (WHO NEED THIS IN ORDER TO DEVELOP CORRECTLY!) or stood up like Britney Spears and her clever lyrics (if you seek Amy).
And if they did that, I can't agree that they are now more honest or worth more in their message. But I would never put them in the same context as Rolling Stones or The Clash.
Are they sex icons in an oversexualized culture that emphasizes youth and symbols? Probably. Are they selling sex? I can probably agree with the author here that they are without facing the restrictions that would come if it was more explicit. Does it make it worse (damaging) that they are advertised as wholesome, family-oriented entertainment? I have no idea. Are there better things kids should be focusing on? Absolutely. Read the Bible, kids. Kids aren't reading the Bible enough these days.
