That, and this is the first time I've ever watched a movie that changed the ending (or cause of ending) of a book/comic/graphic novel that IMPROVED upon the original. Yes, the ending is BETTER in the flick (and more plausable) than the comic.
I think the ending to the movie is far more believable and at the same time delivers the punch-to-the-gut moment the original story did...

The giant squid ending to the comic made sense
within the context of the comic book medium. There is a long history of sci-fi/monster comics... and sense Watchmen the graphic novel was more than anything a commentary on comics & superheroes, the giant squid seemed apropos despite being silly.
Now Zach Snyder correctly saw the need for the Watchmen movie to be a commentary on comic book
movies. That's why you get the redesigned costumes and a revised ending that is more scientific/modern.
