I think you are comparing apples and oranges hcf. The wars we have fought dating back to vietnam have not compared to the world wars, excepting the first gulf war. Guerilla warfare presents a less tangible enemy, and one with which you can't acquire surrender. Instead, you would have to kill off every fanatic, which is not possible.
