The original is titled "The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three" spelled out like that.

The original was good. A lot of the reason was Mattau's sort of wry acting and the NYC 70's gritty feel to it. I haven't seen the new, but I just don't imagine it matching up.
If I'm not mistaken, there was a remake in between the two of those, too.
