Look at their ipod department. They didn't have to do shit to that line to keep their ungodly market share. Yet, they completely cannibalized their sales with the Touch. And they added feature after feature pretty much every year on every iPod line they had.
There are plenty of things wrong with the iPhone and it's ecosystem but no new features because of the lack of competition is not one of them.
