This happens with just about every team in CBB, every season. It happens a lot in CFB. Hell, it even happens in the pros. There's
nothing you can tell a group of ~20 year old kids that will have them motivated to play their best game of the season every game (taking into account they're supposed to get better every game, in theory). There's nothing you can fix... the goals are in March and April, it's f***ing January.
Tennessee had a lot more to prove than Kansas, because shit just got real for that group of kids on NYD. Kansas, OTOH, is heading to Knoxville as the undefeated #1 team in the country, playing something like 4 scholarship players, walk-ons, and some lucky fan from section 122. WTF do you want Self to say that he probably hasn't said at one time or another in the past?
Hell, I did the same thing in college... I had to get way in over my head and get my ass kicked by a few midterms before realizing I had gotten a bit cocky and wasn't in HS any longer.
