Jobian in that you've got a man being tested, it seems. But the idea of him being tested is false. They aren't tests, they're just shit that happens in life. The Rabbis have no answers because there aren't any answers to give. Searching for a meaning is an empty quest; if you get hung up on figuring out why all the bad things in your life are happening to you then you'll eventually end up in an empty motel swimming pool, loudly cursing a God that doesn't exist.
Its a very anti-religious movie to me that regards its religious characters with something that moves beyond pity and into warmth.
