If you read Gladwell's Tipping Point, it really helps to explain why social media works. People that use social media are often mavens and connectors. The majority of the population don't use it, but the people who do use it may play an important role in the success and failure of certain trends and businesses.
I've seen local restaurants and bars catapulted to success or failure completely based on the buzz from twitter and the people who use it.
