One thing I will add on a serious note. There has to be a certain level of comfort. I go to a bar out of habit because at the very least I'll know a couple of people there and it's a relaxing place to drink and relax. No Djs spinning blaring techno or house. No DJs period because it will turn the bar into a doucheteria.
Remember that Pub is short for Public house meaning that in a way patrons want to feel like the place is kind of a home away from home. If you keep that in mind you should be successful.
