It's one of those films with a simple moral on the surface, but the more you think about it the deeper it gets. The obvious one is the old chestnut about self-worth and inner qualities, etc.,. ("Mulan", "Kung Fu Panda", a bunch more.) And it's also an eco-fable ("be nicer to animals" kind of thing). But it also has resonance in how countries/ethnicities relate ("our enemy is not what we think they are" kind of stuff) and it even has a handicapped angle.
The crowds were sparse today but, what people there were, applauded at the end of each film. I think the positive reviews it's getting will help build business for it but, like "Kung Fu Panda", I think it'll do less business than it deserves, simply because it doesn't say "Disney" or "Pixar" at the front of it. Which is a shame. Don't get me wrong, I love Disney, but there's been some very solid non-Disney stuff that gets overlooked (e.g. "The Iron Giant").
