Favre not returning to Vikings?
By Mark J. Miller
Everybody seems to figure Brett Favre(notes) will be back next season with the Minnesota Vikings, but now some doubt is being thrown over that scenario, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
The paper reports that NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci, who also was the quarterbacks coach for the Green Bay Packers when Favre started his career there, recently said that he had talked to Favre and the quarterback is still on the fence on whether he'll come back or not.
And this isn't a case of Favre figuring out if he wants all the bother of playing pro ball or not. The ankle he hurt during the NFC title game loss against the New Orleans Saints is still bugging him.
"He doesn't know yet," Mariucci apparently said. "He's trying to heal up. ... His body is recovered except for that ankle. That's not quite ready yet. It's an ankle that he had surgery on twice before and it's still pretty puffy."
Mariucci said Favre is wondering if his 40-year-old body is telling him something.
The Vikings have the second pick in the second round today that was obtained in a trade with the Detroit Lions. Should be interesting to see if the team goes after a quarterback to add to Tarvaris Jackson(notes) and Sage Rosenfels(notes).

Honestly, if the Vikings thought this was a real possibility, I see no way they trade down in the first.
If they thought Clausen were a developmental guy that they'd have for 2011, the trade-down makes sense.
But if they thought Favre was walking out the door and Clausen was an immediate answer, there's no way they'd have risked losing him for the 4th they picked up.
This report means nothing, IMO.
