Whitlock misses the point. Yes, the US was supposed to win and yes they made it harder on themselves. The point is that like the country they represent they overcome adversity. It does not matter if they have created their own adversity or it was thrust upon them in disallowed goals and lost victories. It matters that instead of falling apart (ala France and Italy) they have managed to hold it together and work a miracle when they needed to.
They might fall short in the end. They might not. The point is that they NEVER gave up and as Americans we should not expect anything less but we should not fail to appreciate it either.
