And they've shown no serious inclination to deal Greinke, either. An official of one club that called said it was told: "We'll always listen. So if you want to throw enough names at us, feel free." But what the Royals actually want is a package led by multiple future ace-type starters. And that's a price no team would pay in this prospects-are-gold era we live in.

Thats encouraging. Asking for several prospects who all project out to #1-#2 starters for Greinke is obviously a hilariously high price that no one will meet. That basically means we aren't serious about trading Greinke at all.

I say thats encouraging because if you believe you cant afford Greinke after 2012, and you think you'll compete in 2012-2013, then it makes sense to seriously talk about trades now when his value is very high to give enough time for the prospects to mature. If the fans bitch about it, so what, they will come watch games when we win.

However, suppose you think you have plenty to pay Soria, Greinke, and a few other future stars? Maybe not hang on to everyone, but hang on to a lot of people? If you are the White Sox, the Giants, or some other team thats not hugely rich but has some money, you don't trade Greinke for prospects. You make that trade only if you have to, or if a team ridiculously overpays. We seem to be fishing for a team that is willing to ridiculously overpay, which tells me we can re-sign him.
